    DDR2 or DDR3 ?

I'm getting an inkling to build another rig, my current one is getting very long in the tooth so to speak with an AGP video bus, I'm missing out on a lot of games. I really only build every 3 -4 years with perhaps a video upgrade in-between so my thinking at this point is that I should go with the latest in DDR3 stuff even though it's relatively costly compared to the 2 variety at the moment.

I won't start looking at MB's till I make this decision then I'll start acquiring parts over the next couple of months to make the build around Dec or Jan. How about some insights and thoughts.

Hmmm... I usually decide on CPU and Motherboard first...

Then get whatever ram is recommended by the motherboard maker.

Thought about going DDR3 with the 4th quad... But decided the slight increase in speed I'd see wasn't worth the extra 100 bucks they wanted for the stuff.

I had the same thoughts, Zammy. I started looking at DDR3, but couldn't convince myself it was worth it. I ended up with another DDR2 mobo. DDR3 has come down in price though.

I guess I should have given a few more tidbits along with my question, what I'm trying to do is future proof the rig for at least a couple of years, I know, that's almost impossible with the way things move with computers but those are my thoughts.

I'll definitely be using an Intel CPU, and a nvidia card, just not sure which chipset yet, I've got a lot of reading to do as I've been pretty lax of late keeping up with things. I'll for sure be doing some OC'ing and was figuring the DDR3 would give some extra oomph to the rig for awhile at least.

    Any more input is appreciated.

I don't really know a lot about RAM, but if it were me I'd get the DDR3 and the best CPU, motherboard and Video Card you can right now. Future proofing starts with your initial purchases.

I'll tell you why I say this shit. I probably have spent close to $3000 on my current computer because of buying things that were "good enough" and not buying things that I thought weren't "worth the money" at the time.

I've gone through 3 video cards in the past year and a half. I've spent more money on RAM. I've upgraded my CPU. I've replaced my power supply (and what's bad about that is, I bought a less expensive 485W one to replace the one that came with my case initially and ended up buying another better one again after that). I've bought more expensive hard disks too, because I bought one initially that was "good enough".

    Never again.

My thoughts exactly Grogan, when I built my current rig 3 years ago, it was top of the line everything and I haven't been sorry for that. I don't mind spending the bucks on something new but it has to be the latest.
