Well.. shit..

Today, it will not startx - It's been down a while, but I finally got a new PSU in it and got the box back up...

I did switch the monitor, but it's the same sync rate and res....

WHere does this bitch put the log when X locks up and you have to hard boot to get control back?

Edit: Did some research - I don't have the most current driver-fine - wget to the rescue..

Found this driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.19-pkg2.run (GE Force 8400GS is the card)

If it's a 64 bit OS, you need the 64 bit driver.

Make sure PROPER kernel source is installed (the kernel you are using... leave the source you compiled your kernel with in place after the compile), for the Nvidia installer needs to compile the kernel interface.

I have no idea why it would stop working if it was working before (unless you installed a new kernel or something... you must reinstall/install new Nvidia driver every time you do that because it needs to (re)compile). It shouldn't just blow up on its own, so that probably means you have had data corruption on the hard disk. It could be the tip of the iceberg.

Then you probably pulled in a kernel update or something. Nvidia needed reinstalling (or at least rebuilding the kernel modules... there's a switch to do only that. I always just reinstall it though and it does the right thing)

Nope... same same... Even thou the driver installed fine (including compiling the kernel interface) - starting x results in a blank screen and you have to power reset the fucker to get out.. followed by 30 mins of fsck against 3tb of HDD to try again...

run "nvidia-xconfig" to make sure your xorg.conf file is correct for the Nvidia driver.

You could have a bunch of wrongness after doing updates though. I would never do that in Slackware. (slackpkg and friends, especially after two years)

You could try forcefully reinstalling all the X11/xorg packages. Download them, put them in a directory, cd into it and:

upgradepkg --install-new --reinstall *.txz

Maybe even install the original ones from the distro, then get the correct versions that the slackpkg updating tool did, and upgrade. Probably they came from:

/pub/slackware/slackware-13.0/patches/packages

on any of the slackware mirrors that have packages.

So if you did the above upgradepkg --install-new --reinstall command with the original packages (e.g. on the original Slackware 13 CD you installed from), then a normal upgradepkg without the --reinstall -install-new with the updated packages it should work. In fact perhaps everything in that directory. You would certainly want to make sure you are using the correct glibc and stuff for any updated packages.

Or... it's been two years since you used the sucker anyway, so you could just redo it without too much hardship.

It's odd.. the nvidia-xconfig writes out a shitty default config.. I went and found the screen definition values for the sony I am using, and added that to the config. Still stalls... From the log, last thing it says is....

"NVIDIA(0) Enabling 2D Acceleration"

That log doesn't include anything about the nVidia driver other than:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log would be more relevant. (That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be useful either but it's where any X server startup messages will be)

Yeah, not much happens after a lockup like that I guess. It looks normal until the bitter end there.

Wondering if there is a hardware fault... any other OS available to boot on that thing? I'd say try a Live CD, but not many of them would come with a driver that would actually initialize all the functionality of your accelerator. It would probably work fine with "nv" with virtually no hardware acceleration.

I don't know if this is relevant in this case, but the Nuveau (sp?) driver conflicts with the nVidia proprietary driver badly enough that the nVidia driver refuses to load if the other isn't blacklisted. It might refuse to compile, too, I don't remember. If the updates brought that back into the mix it could be causing trouble.

Hmmm... let's ask... The PSU I added was a 600W - Is that too small for a i7 quad, 4 HDD's, 1 DVD and the Nvidia 8400 GS? Could lack of power be causing the failure to switch video modes, or maybe it's just the old monitor? I just used that monitor last week to repair a WinXP and build an i5 for a client (Win7) and all the video modes on it were ok then...

One other stupid question - can root use X, or should I be trying to invoke it from a regular user account?

A shitty PSU could cause that, even if it says "600W" on the label. That does sound a bit like a stretch for that system.

A fuss assed monitor (did you say Sony Baloney?) might act up like this with frequencies even slightly out of bounds. It might not happen in Windows. It should be easy enough to test with a different monitor. That wouldn't halt the machine though, you should be able to kill X. For that matter, have you tried to ssh in or anything when it locks up? It might just be display and input devices that are not responding.

Root can certainly use X. It's bad practice to run the machine as root, but there's nobody more privileged to start X if he wants to

Well, when I tried with the "nv" driver, I was able to ctrl-alt-backspace out - and, the log said the nv driver was not found....

When I use the "nvidia" driver I installed the other day - Lock city...

Btw, I don't think I ever redid the kernel after upgrading to 13 - It's base, I'm pretty sure...

I'm trying unbuntu live CD now...as soon as fsck finishes, that is...

Ok, I had the BusId wrong - I fixed it and launched it from the main console while I was ssh'd in from another machine as root... Sumbitch X is taking 100% abd will not terminate - I see lots of threads online about infiniteloops with nvidia drivers too....

Well, something has got to be hosed. It worked before. The Nvidia driver is dead nuts easy... it almost always does the right thing. That's a pretty straight forward mature card too.

Yes, it worked before.... I took it to 13 - At this point I'm about ready to rebuild a new kernel any how and the threads about the loops (December 2011 timeframe) refer to some required kernel changes required with the driver of that time...

And the workload I was running on this rig benefited from a customized kernel.

but one thing is for damn sure - It's a tight loop X is in when it's stalled...

I could not break it loose, and even when I issued shutdown from root on the SSH session, it basically ignored it becaus X was taking 100% of the resources...

All I can offer right now is that this Slack 13.37 64bit install runs sweet with the 250.10 nVidia driver and dual monitors. As to what's hosed in your setup I'm grasping as some pretty feint straws. I can certainly upload any config files you might like to play with.

I'm at "Linux 2.6.29.6" on the kernel - I know I'm a few revisions back on the kernel...

I blacklisted the nouveau driver just as a precaution as a lot of threads at Linuxquestions.org talk about it being a problem, and so had you.. no feking difference....Here is the Xorg.0.log

Well, that last xorg log shows a misconfiguration (no screens found and failing to start). When it's configured correctly and X starts, it freezes.

Your kernel version is fine and I can see the nvidia module loading in your dmesg output. (looks good)

As I said earlier, I am suspecting a hardware fault. (Video card? PSU?)

I no longer think it's the monitor, because of the way X was deadlocking (100% CPU)

Ooga Booga freezes up too.

If Ooga Booga is locking up I'm suspicious of the video card as well. It's usually pretty fool proof (has to be).

Ok, time for a stupid question - I have forgotten how to figure out exatly what wattage I need.

This rig had set idle and with no PSU in it for about a year....the vid card had less than 100 hours on it before that...

So perhaps I was too CHEAP when I picked out a 600 watt PSU.

Also, I finally got enough time in my day to get 13.37 DVD downloaded and burnt.

Do "we" thinl it's worth the efforts to go thru the upgradepkg path?

Can't tell you what "we" think, but I (being me, myself and that other bastard wearing my clothes) would do a clean install and be done with it. If I had to guess I'd figure you'd have all your data on a separate partition (if not entire drive) to your OS and you'd already know what additional packages you had installed so they can be grabbed when you're up and running.

Yes my shit is isloated... Justa few directories to copy off

There are three HDD's in there - each is a 1TB drive

So, no real shortage - takes a LOT to emulate the systems I roll on

Should be easy enough to just copy off those specific config files that are a PIA to rebuild for your specific apps.

Custom kernel ... serious storage ... are you virtualising (or at least simulating) your Big Iron environment on that poor little beastie?

Just a little note on PSU's - I have two systems each with a similar number of HD's to yours, my main system with Mint uses the same vid card as your Slack machine, and it has a 750W Corsair. The other one, my gaming machine with an HD 6970 has an 850W Corsair

600W is fine (with that video card), if it's a good quality power supply. When buying one I'd go higher, but PSUs are just something I don't like to cut corners on. Modern hard disks don't use as much power as you might think. 3 hard disks isn't a big deal.

I wouldn't try to upgrade packages either... I would do a fresh install. However, my money is on hardware. (suspecting video card)
