Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.

    thanks Mr. DA,

That's a huge load of stuff to look at. I'm not too interested in sniffing around anyone's networks. I just need a minimum of info when I'm setting someone up...list other networks in the area, with or without SSIDs, mac addresses, what channels people are using that sort of thing.

    Actually, sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    gives me what I need.
what I like about inSSIDer is the ability to track signal strength over time.

I have an app on my Android phone that does that. It lists off SSIDs, signal strengths and channel usage though it's limited to 802.11b/g. My phone doesn't do 5GHz stuff.

tell me more about that will you..it would be worth grabbing. I have an Android ver. 2.2.2 phone. My phone does 802.11n but only on the 2.4 gig frequency.

I have three tools I use. Wifi Analyzer, File Expert and Overlook Fing (yes, that's what it's called) all free on the Android Market. I'm sure they have paid versions but the little advertising that comes with the free versions isn't a bother for the little I use them.

Dude, thank you mucho for those, I have only had this android phone for a month or so and had no idea that sophisticated apps like these were available for the phone. I got all the ones you listed..that Fing network tools app is really a handy item.. they are all good.

I also have a SSH client called ConnectBot that's quite handy for fucking with the kids while they're on their respective computers (not that I'm the network admin from hell or anything )

"I also have a SSH client called ConnectBot"
    Got that, and AndFTP client.
I guess after fooling with applications in different Linux distros for so long, I was surprised that every one of these android apps works perfectly as they should the minute the installation is done...
    I don't get it....

thanks again for the help DA

Fing has an Android phone, I wonder if he has Overlook Fing, or did he overlook that one?

Yes, Fing does have an android phone. Sprint seems to think it needs an extra $10 tacked on the bill for a premium data plan.

That being the case, and since the data plan has no limits, Fing don't use the WIFI on his phone. I work the everloving shit out of Sprint's network. Even plug it in to a set of speakers and listen to Pandora radio for hours from time to time.

Hehehe! At least that beats the extra $30/month that Verizon tacks on for data, which is supposed to be unlimited, but not really.

Ahh yes. Verizon.. One of the companies who's unlimited plan slows down the more you use it.

Data is an extra charge on sprint as well, but it's figured in as part of the family plan we are on.
The extra $10 is "cause it's a smart phone" BS and can actually do web surfing and other shit like netflix. ROFL!
Now there's something that eats up some bandwidth. Looks pretty good when I have my phone HDMI to the TV.
