My Netbook's OS Is Gettin Old...

I have Mint 10 running on my netbook, it's no longer supported & no more updates. I've been considering maybe upgrading it to something newer, but what would be a good choice for a netbook which is mostly only used for live streams and podcasts while I'm in the kitchen - Mint 13 Cinnamon? KDE? XFCE? ...Unity?

I'm still happy with 10.04 LTS on my little Asus netbook Zema..(Intel Atom D525 - 4 gigs mem - dual booting with Win. 7 32bit).
    Gnome 2.30.2
I know there are probably better/newer solutions, but it works so well and still gets updated so I'm just leaving it alone. I use it for mostly what you do and taking along if I have to set up a router somewhere.. Actually since I got the android phone and Mr. DA revealed some of the tools available for free, I use my phone for more and more little things.

I would just leave it alone. What do you need updates for? The "security" fixes aren't anything like Windows.

It's just a netbook... you have nothing to gain by messing with the OS. If you're unhappy with something and looking for improvements, fine, but all you will do with a new *buntu based distro is bloat it up with more rubbish.

The next OS that goes on mine will be a hammer, to smash it before putting it in the trash. (I'm happy with what I have, happy that there are no more updates and I'll use it until the machine dies)

Thanks Mike and Michael, you guys probably right, I was just curious how something newer might look and run on this little machine. But it is running fine with Mint 10. Maybe I'll just add XFCE to it from Mint 10's repos, that's one thing that might be worth the trouble.

I'm hoping to get my hands on a notebook at some point as much for it's own usefulness as so I can play around getting Slack running on it.

Why don't you turn it into a lightweight media centre setup? There's a few of 'em out there that cover the basics + media.

Yes, XFCE is pretty good on a netbook. (It's of course what I use)

I got XFCE up and running on it now, and it does seem noticeably quicker. I haven't done any customizing yet, it's still all completely stock, but it actually looks pretty good as is. I liked the transparency settings I had in Gnome, but compiz probably isn't good for performance on a netbook. Do you have compiz turned on on your netbook Gro?

You should be able to use Compiz with Intel graphics (I have before) but that's not really practical for a netbook. You haven't got the CPU time to waste.

I use a bit of compositing effects in XFCE though... various degrees of transparency for moving windows and inactive ones etc.

Here's how my netbook looks now with XFCE and a darker theme I found, the same one I'm using on my main machine. I still haven't gotten around to adding better wallpaper, just using the best one of those that come with XFCE.

And here's my main machine with Compiz running in XFCE with the new dark theme (& showing only the primary display):

My biggest complaint about Linux visually is the lack of a professional looking, system wide, black / carbon theme in these desktop environments. Like KDE has a shit load of them and they far outweigh lighter / air themes, and none of them cut it after a while.

The only one I remember seeing that I could live with long term was in an Ubuntu once and they'd actually got a reasonable balance using greys, carbon and black and got the highlighting reasonable so you weren't met by a solid wall of one particular shade.

I agree, it's been frustrating. You'd think that especially KDE with it's endless collection of widgets and panels and shit could have pulled it off.. but there's still nothing perfect yet.

    That looks awesme Michael

Most of the included themes are way too light, yet most people I know like darker themes.

I finally put some decent wallpaper on it. This is actually from a Windows 7 space scenes theme I found:

And here's some pictures of the machine itself. Note the big red sticker covering up the built-in vid camera and mic. Despite the odds, especially considering it's running Linux, it still creeps me out having a camera and mic pointed at me when I don't think I'm "on camera"

    and the big picture:

Thanks Michael, I keep my netbook on the kitchen counter to watch/listen to videos while fixing/having dinner and breakfast (mostly on weekends)
