Sounds to me like someone is just taking an easy way out of handling warranties ... possibly at the request of another interested company.

Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.
Newegg honoured the warranty. A lot of manufacturers say that too, but defective hardware is defective hardware. It might get them out of hand holding phone support, but warranty of the physical goods still applies.
I'm sure it was to stave off the bad publicity and death threats etc. but they would have had to honour that in the end regardless.I spoke with a "Public Image Professional" from Newegg who contacted me via email regarding my RMA. She immediately offered to replace the laptop or process a full refund, and I accepted the latter given all the issues I've had with them. I received an RMA confirmation telling me that it has been approved as a defective product return, and that I will receive a credit in 3-5 business days.
I would probably chock it up to employees who can't think for themselves.
This same think happened to someone else I know (PiNkY aka Mousie). It was her ... persistence that won out over the desk drone and the store policy. They tried to refuse her warranty because she had Linux installed even though it was a broken hinge.
Incidentally, don't go to war with Ms Mousie unless you REALLY mean it!
edit: being immune to wombats might also help.

I'll chalk that one up to an improperly educated employee who most likely doesn't know anything else but winblows.
Let's see. this makes three people I know of that have had issues with hardware failures and having linux on a system sent in for work.
This person, Pinky, and the guy that actually sued Best buy a few years back.
