    Rasberry Pi

I ordered one a coupla months ago, it arrived on Saturday and today I tried it out.

Loaded Debian onto sd card and booted - startx

It's a bit slower online using the default Minora browser than other machines I have and I haven't tinkered with it yet. I'm using my phone PSU (1A) atm but will buy a dedicated PSU and also a powered USB hub.

    Here's some pix:

    But can it run DOOM?
    My life is slipping away
    I'm aging every day
    But even when I'm grey
I'll still be grey my way

Doom? Maybe. Crysis ... how many frames a minute would you like? (enter a single digit number here < >)

Seriously though, that's a very interesting little beastie indeed.
Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.

I did consider using it as a media machine but it has no digital audio out, just analogue. Atm I'm using optical/digital sound out from cheapo Asus board to a DAC which gives a very good sound indeed, so, undecided.

And nope, no games. Well, AFAIK no games...

You should have digital output via the HDMI.

Not all HDMI implementations support audio.

As with the YCbCr video, device support for audio is optional.

    Key word was "should"

But I did find this nice little spec sheet..

    http://elinux.org/RPi_Hardware

Seems there's a version of XBMC that works with the little beast.
Hmmm. Not yet stable they say. DOH!

Works fine for most, it's been demo'd at shows enough, online vids started appearing a few months back, etc: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/571

    Good link BH.

I'm a little confused as how to take hdmi audio to a DAC. From the brief research I've done it appears hdmi is not the best audio source to use, S/PDIF being the preferred format. And it seems there are no commercially available DAC's that take hdmi. This thread on another forum Here goes some way to explaining the situation, it appears DAC manufacturers have to pay a licence fee to allow hdmi to be used with their devices, hdmi is subject to DRM and it also suffers from audio jitter, the jitter being high compared to other audio sources.

FYI this is the DAC I use Here, I put it in a case with switch, neon and three rca sockets and it sounds just as good as commercial equivalents costing several hundreds of pounds each. I did have to use one of These with it and total cost of everything including leads came to £73.50. And apparently I can improve the sound by using different op-amps, a recommended one costs £6 from RS. Haven't done so yet though, very happy with sound as it is.

That's pretty cool Flopps You guys are lucky, I've been waiting six months to find these in stock somewhere. One site says they'll only be getting 16 of them in August, and then after that the next shipment won't come until November.
