How about, when it detects a web cam?

I should bite the bullet and do my netbook... maybe Sunday if I don't have to go anywhere. I can't really mess with it during the week because I may need it for jobs. (e.g. I never know when I'm really done for the day)

It picked up the web cam in my Eee during install, but for some reason it didn't work right when it cam to setting up the login picture. I had to take another pic (pretty much any format was good enough) and call it .face in my home directory, but then I also had to put one with my user name in a "faces" directory somewhere as well for t to pik things up for some reason.
    I used this:michael.jpg
Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.

Hey Mike, I also made use of most of your settings, so thanks!

Here's a look at my desktop. It's a work in progress.

I finally finished up configuring my netbook. Besides the visual tweaks I set it up for conservative resource use, with zero composting, no wallpaper or screensaver changing, and no screensaver at all, just power management off for the screen after 40 mins. I set up the bottom panel with everything I thought I might need, except network drive access, I couldn't get that to work from a panel launcher, and I do use that.

With the bottom panel set to auto-hide, and no icons on the screen, it's a pretty clean desktop:

There, it should be good for the next five years I think

I've been happily running this on my netbook now for a while and decided to try the Chromium package in the repos.
Damn! On this limited memory machine (AMD C50 dual core 1GHz, 1GB RAM, integrated Raedon graphics) this browser HONKS!
I may end up doing a local kernel compile because ... well, because I can. There's no real reason to, it just amuses me to do so. Probably take all night, too.
Anyway, Firefox on this is a little laggy but not too bad overall. Chromium is just plain better in every way I've tried since installing it.

That's what I've mostly been using on it too, along with Chrome

If compiling a custom kernel for this latest crop of Mint/*buntu, and you want it to boot:

I did one on my desktop, using an initrd (make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers) but vanilla source and it boots fine. I don't remember, though, if that setting was checked or not.

Yes it is, in their config.

I move those out of /boot before I configure a kernel, otherwise I'm going to have to go through every menu and deselect almost everything. Sometimes it takes a few passes to get other dependencies turned off first, before you can even turn shit off, to make it worse. The whole point of compiling a custom kernel is to optimize, reduce and remove the need for an initrd, to me.

Ok. I'm just starting with a make oldconfig, playing with a few settings like the processor type, number of cores and maybe the right vga drivers, and then building. I could go through and whittle it down to nothing but the exact modules that I need, but I don't have the time to really play with it. I'm sure your kernels are far more efficient than mine, but that last 1% on this little thing isn't going to make much difference to my user experience. Maybe between semesters I might try for a high efficiency compile, just not right now.
