News Chief calls for tougher digital Copyright laws in Australia

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-2...t-laws/4213362

Here's another goon ranting about piracy without paying attention to what comes out of his own mouth.
He's asserting that people illegally downloading movies, tv shows and music are costing the Australian industry $1.37 billion last year alone and that the people downloading do not buy more DVDs, CDs etc (as claimed by several studies) but less.
As usual logic is not this guy's friend.
If people will not pay for the media but then download it, it has not cost the industry anything, very simply because they, by his own admission, would have never paid for it anyway, so if they hadn't downloaded it they would have still not bought it. How, precisely, can you lose money from people downloading when you would never have gotten the sale either way?
Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.

He sounds like another dinosaur fighting a losing battle with extinction. Another bald geezer who thinks the people owe him his millions of dollars.

What really gets me is the fuss they make over TV shows. OK, I get it, you want to show ads on TV but once it's past, it's past. What does an individual recording a show and sharing it cost anyone? They certainly get nothing from me because I don't have time to watch shows when they decide to show them and if I did, I would either flick to another channel, or pay no attention to advertising. They get their money for SHOWING it regardless.

P.S. Another thing that bugs me is "piracy costs the economy!". Bullshit... people only have so much disposable income. If anything, I would probably say piracy HELPS the economy because if people aren't wasting their money smoking the crack from the entertainment industries (foreign in many cases), they might buy more tangible goods that actually create jobs for the many, instead of making an elite few get rich. Even that is probably not that significant, because it's true that people who pirate stuff probably would never have paid for it in the first place.

I got ticked off the other day when Netflix dropped all of Stargate SG-1 when I was right in the middle of it, no warning at all, it was just gone. They licence it from the studios and didn't renew the lic, because the lic fee went up and/or they didn't think enough people were watching it. Either way, they're both baphunes. Subscribers are paying for the service, is it really worth it to make their customers mad to save a few $'s, when a lot of those customers will just go elsewhere? I was already unhappy with Netflix for lying about bringing support for Linux. So now I'm watching it via Amazon, which does work perfectly fine with Linux.

Seems we regularly get some twerp spouting off about media 'piracy'. This is usually for two reasons: 1) nasty bastid politico or CEO-type wants his mugshot in the papers and 15 minutes of fame 2) Somebody from the so-called entertainment industry has slipped the buffoon a nice back-hander to spout forth on something he probably knows nothing about.

Fact is, most musicians now accept they'll make little from music sales but if they can put bums on seats then they'll earn a very sizeable profit from touring. The CD or mp3 download is now the promo for the tour where once it was vice versa.

When was the last time you saw a poor movie star? The movie induustry still take lots of money from public showings in the first month or so (if the film's any good, that is) and DVD/Bluray sales are still a definite source of income for them. They're doing ok, no tears from me for them.

Me personally: forty years of DJ-ing and a huge music fan, I don't like to think how much I've spent in one lifetime on music, bought my first album when I was nine years old. So, I do not feel guilty torrenting back catalogue discographys, I figure I've paid my dues to the BPI & RIAA already. Call me wrong, call me a thief, call me despicable and I will tell you to fuck off

As for movies, I've paid to see a lot in my time, bought a fair few DVD's and I still visit the cinema. I buy the occasional Bluray disc but most of the films I watch now are avi or mkv files I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a DVD. I do buy used DVD's sometimes though, usually 'cult' movies, like, last week I bought the DVD film 'If' from around 1969 with Malcolm McDowell in it before he appeared in Clockwork Orange.

A little off topic but last night I watched the first Bourne movie, I think it was Indemnity from 2002 and very good it was too. But my oh my did it ever show how fast technology has moved in one decade. Scores of big beige CRT monitors, clunky mobile phones and European cars with angular body shapes, as opposed to the current rounded car body fad.
