Wink Want a Windows 8 Start Button?

Open Source mod gives Metro a shove, read all about it:

    On the button

But will it be enough to tempt the hordes who think Win 8 is tosh?

A more pertinent question might be why a third party had to develop a mod that many think MS should have offered as an option.

That's pretty cool! Get it running like normal Windows then it might be worth while. Paul Thurrott has been touting Win8 for being much less bloated, faster booting and with some new stuff in the desktop mode. So get rid of Metro and all the related bs, and it might be worth the $40

Thanks Floppy, might give that a go but like MSU, I've not touched Win8 since before vacation.

If you have to install a third party shell just to make it usable, that's a miserable failure.

Bollocks to the performance improvements all the Microsoft tools are raving about. Minor improvements at best (e.g. more hardware accelerated text rendering... whoopee doo. We already have that) If it's not as "bloated" it's only because it doesn't do much. Functionality has been stripped away, such that you have to use fucking keyboard shortcuts to get anything done. I HATE keyboard shortcuts! They just cause things to get actuated by accident when I'm typing and it's not always easy to figure out what happened.

Fast boot time? I'll tell you what fast boot times have gotten us in Windows. Since Vista, Windows no longer probes for disk controllers at boot. That means, if a setting gets changed in the bios, Windows will blue screen instead of detecting the change and carrying on. Changing it back doesn't always fix it either, because Windows can break itself.

Sorry, I'll take a system that's robust and resilient over fast booting any day. Why do you think you can stick a Linux hard disk in just about any computer and have it boot? Because they don't care about shaving a few seconds off the boot time and do what needs to be done, every boot. They'd rather give you a fast, stable system that doesn't need to reboot often instead of using hibernation style trickery to boot fast.

Can't argue with any of that Grogan. But it'll probably be a good idea to be familiar with Windows 8 and ways to make it better (or I should say right).
