Bit the bullet-Mint 13 installed – 235 days old

I decided to redo my X install yesterday because of Mint 13 being a LTR, I was used to using Cinnamon in Mint 12 so I opted for that version, 64 bit. The install went smooth and even after over 400 updates it was still running, lol, you never know for sure. I went ahead and installed the latest kernel in the repos so now it's running 3.2.3 and updated Cinnamon to 1.6 which came out a few days ago along with a new file manager called Nemo. I also got Chromium 20 up and running, wow, it's really quick and I've been messing around with themes, backgrounds, etc, and settled on this for now.

The only glitch so far is that Firefox and Chromium open up in full screen all the time, even if I change it to regular size the next link I click on goes full screen again, need to do some investigation, perhaps it's the themes I have installed as it didn't do that when I had it running in VBox.

Looks good Zammy, I might try it alongside XFCE when I redo my main machine's Mint12 install.

I still haven't upgraded my netbook. I'd like to, but I have a hard time convincing myself for no real reason. This does everything I need it to with this (customized) Xubuntu setup. So what if there's no more updates, the "security" issues aren't as urgent as Windows (for various reasons)

I don't mind that Cinnamon too much though. I could almost use that (why would I when it's not my favourite, though)

I still prefer the previous Slack install I had on my desktop, though the newer hardware didn't like it for whatever reason. I'll be keeping Mint on this netbook, it works pretty well for this, but will probably go back to Slackware on my main rig once 14 rolls out, assuming I don't get a bug in my butt and try 13.37 just to see if it just needed a clean install for some reason. All my stuff is safely (and regularly) backed up now so I'm not afraid of losing everything again.

Mint 12 ran like a bewt on my friends (three and a bit year old) laptop, t'was fast and zippy and picked up[ his 3-in-1 wireless printer without fuss and gave good functionality, he loved it. Went to Mint 13 and it was a fat, slow, turd by comparison, plus, it wouldn't pick up his wireless printer. So he just went back to 12.

I've just installed the new PCLOS mini-me on it and the hardware seems to like it and it picks his printer up with a little jiggle. So far he likes it and the overall speed is roughly on a par with his old Mint 12 install.

Mint started to feel a little ... not what I meant to have, so I tried to get Slack running on the AMD hardware. Stupid HP motherboard just would NOT play nice with Slackware, I had all sorts of messed up audio issues so I've gone back to my Q6600 and bugger the power consumption. It lets me run whatever OS I want without stupidity.

For the netbook, like I said, Mint is the biz, it's just not quite everything I want for my desktop.

I've always liked Mint. I need to lay hands on some blank DVDs one of these days, so I can install it on my desktop machine again. My old Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L mobo doesn't support booting from USB.

I'm smitten with Sabayon Core CDX (or Spinbase if you want an Xorg-less base) for a distro that offers a slice of everything for everyone. Best of all worlds; kitchen sink dvds or minimal base installs available with a choice of desktop environments; large repo with wide range of up to date software; a choice of running a Gentoo portage based system or Sabayon's Entropy binary package management, you can even mix the two if you know what you're doing.

I've found it powerful and flexible enough for netbook and desktop. I found the new 10 version fixed a couple of glitches with the CoreCDX disk. Still doesn't beat Chakra for a straight KDE system but it's a bigger, longer established project with different goals. I like it.
