Australia helps bust global bogus virus scam

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-10-0...s-scam/4294482

Australian investigators have helped bust an international scam in which consumers were duped into paying to clean their computers of bogus viruses.

US officials say 14 companies using staff posing as Microsoft employees convinced consumers their computers had virus infections which could cause massive problems.
I'm finding it very difficult to comment on this story without using profane celebratory language. Quite simply I am rather pleased life just got harder for these douche-bags and hope karma is a vindictive bitch for the rest of their sorry lives.
Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.

How about a jubilant Hip, Hip, Hooray!
    My life is slipping away
    I'm aging every day
    But even when I'm grey
I'll still be grey my way

Five times they tried it on family and friends and I got a call immediately after every time. They all managed to use their brain and tell them to fuck off apart from one knobhead who actually let them take control of the laptop

That's ruined my fun tho. Twice I had a ball super fast talking in dialect "can't quite hear you mate, yer mouth's full of shit" etc, etc, etc. Rape alarm down the phone was a laugh too.

I did have a disposable VM set up and was planning to let them in to it, let them do their worst and capture and record every packet the came and went with Wireshark on the host machine. Losing my data buggered that idea but then it's not so much of an issue now.

Here's someone that used a virtual machine to mess with one of those creeps:

Near the end, you can see the prick trying to delete the user's files from the "computer" (skip closer to the end if you get bored)

Wow...I'm speechless. I did end up watching the whole thing because I couldn't believe even a novice would fall for this kind of scam. But I know they do. And the gall of the guy to try trashing the computer once he's called out on the scam.

I don't know about that specific vid, but I've seen others like that before. If you let them in the douche-bags will delete files if you are hesitant to cough up your CC or bank details (the one I saw the DB didn't think to empty the recycle bin after clicking 'delete'. Fucking amateurs) as well as change systems settings and screw with startup services, all via remote desktop though, nothing at all clever.
"Prison rape" is too good for these ass-bags.

I ended up watching the whole thing too. They first take him to the actual MS website, then from there to their own scam site, which looks nothing like Microsoft, by just manually entering the address, like the fact that they stopped by the MS website first before going somewhere else really makes them look legit. You'd think they would have just used something like "microsoft.scammers.c0m" with a page that looked like MS's site.

They would expect to get away with that address bar tomfoolery and equally lame tricks, because if they get someone that far in to their scam, they are likely to be a complete grandma and really not understand the significance of what's going on.

That was well played. I had to pause it and go get some cookies, because I felt compelled to watch it. I did skip ahead for part of it though, it was just going round and round with the download. Still doing it where I resumed.
