what i'm wondering is how can you possibly upgrade from a OS which is still a dos shell to a 2kpro or xp which is essentially based off of unix OS, aside from saving your GUI settings what do they do?, lurch

ok james , just for you, although i feel violated now, lets see the tv tuner that i just got wont work on xp, handful of programs such as one of my favortite games slave zero, might as well throw out, and handful of other things, it made me happy that i had to use the scroll bar extensively on the INCOMPADIBILITY list, but most of my hardware was fine, although until not too long ago i was actively using a 33mhz machine as a backup running 3.11, thats right not just 3.1, thats windows 3.11..., so its not like i have to leave all that soon, if anything i really want to make a tri-boot machine running win2kpro as primary os , 98se for all the crap that i just can't do in 2k, and madrake 8(curtesy of floppy) just so i learn it, the only thing that made me happy james was that the mircrosoft site allowed me to utulize my beautiful cable modem dl speed of 300kb/sec, its worth all 40 dollars every month i swear, (especially since i split it 3 ways with my bros. ) , lurch

Boys boys, let me enlighten you.

I'm not sticking up for MS. god knows they need somebody to do that though, but they are trying to make the "upgrade path" a little easier this time. I, for one, think they have done a dam good job.

I installed XP on one of the workshop machines ... prior to installation you are given the option of using the Upgrade Advisor, its on the CD, so I did.

I was quite surprised to see that it "passed" with only a couple of suggestions to re-install the likes of ZoneAlarm. Obvious considering XP is W2K with bells on.

However, the advisor said my video card was incompatible an S3 Trio. as I was keen to see what all the hype was about XP that I installed it anyway. hehe not only did it find the video card it also installed the correct drivers for it.

Those of you running W2K should have no problems but you will only be able to "upgrade” using XP Pro version, unless you do a clean install of the Home Edition.

I would highly recommend the Pro version, especially if you run a network.

Well just finished downloading and run.

I'm currently running Win2k so no problems reported.

For those that are runing certain hardware, that is either old or uses deepdown system resources, then they will need to get knew software drivers or won't work at all - not sure what the surpise is there.

It was like that from DOS to 3.x, from 3.1 to 95 - 95 to 98 nothing much needed. Form NY to win2k there were a lot of changes. It's all in the past history, so not sure why peeps are so surprised.
Be grateful we aren't running MACS - they aren't great believers in using legacy items, when they go for an OS change, they don't want to get hampered down with supporting legacy hardware, if it works it works, if it doesn't tough luck, you gotta go out and buy new.

    Cool triple boot

First of all, credit where credit's due, I'd like to thank Muckshifter for my copy of Mandrake 8, twas he who took the bother to download the ISO's on his cable modem, burn them, and post them on to me. So, Lurch, I'm just an intermediary in this thing

Secondly, Lurch, I've managed the triple boot thing, using Partition Magic 6.0. As I remember, I first installed WIN 98SE, installed PM 6.0, inc. Bootmagic 6.0, then created all the partitions I needed for Linux.

I installed Linux (on the 2nd attempt! - was a bit tricky, that one ) then loaded WIN 2K, carefully following the options it gives you on install.

In the end, when I booted, from Bootmagic I was given a choice of two menus: Windows/DOS and Linux. Selecting the Windows option then gave me a choice of WIN98 or WIN2K.

It worked fine, but I seem to remember I used a FAT 32 based file system for WIN 2K, not NTFS.

Good luck Lurch, if you need any help when you go for it, give us a shout. I can, at least, let you know about the Linux partitions you need to load Mandrake 8, I'm running it on this machine right now (Not that I've got my head round it yet, but at least it's loaded and stable).

thanks mucks for giving mandrake 8 to flopps who gave it to me

flopps, i problably wont be able to get around to the tri booting stuff till i get my winter break at the end of the semester, i could do it now but i really need the study time at the moment, but thx for the support offer, i'm sure i'll have to take you up on it when the time comes

james, i know your upset, but do you really want to upgrade right now anyway?, if so you may have to bite the bullet, but otherwise give it time as things are worked out on the os it might not go over so bad, unless its one of those situations where ms just doens't feel like fixing it lurch

Hi James, I really feel for you as software is expensive.

The hardware section, the manufacturers will in all likely hood be bringing out supported drivers.

It's just the Won't run on XP software section that you really need to think about. The software there is quite old now( very usable for a long time to come on Win98, but old compared to todays software) I would hazard a guess of 2-3 years? It probably wouldn't run on Win2k either.

You will still be able to run it for many years to come, but probably on Win98, which is what it was designed for. But all is not lost, even now MS is bringing out regular Windows Update fixes to the O/s which allow prgrams that wouldn't run on Win2k when it first came out to now run. The list of prgrams that now run on Win2k is pretty big now. I'm sure they will do the same of XP.

Lastly XP is not a must have OS, people have been using Win98, well, since 1998, and it still performs very well, so don't feel you have to upgrade.

having run the test it turns out the only things it was unhappy about was the Logitech Mouseware and the Via IDE driver I have. Both of which should have XP versions anyway so my system is looking pretty XP-ready....

My printer, firewall and cd-burning software need updating. Not that it matters at all since i'll be building a new system for XP.
