Using Partition Magic To Manage Your Disks - Page2

Once Partition Magic has loaded, you will be presented with the following screen:

As you can see, the program interface looks almost identical to a standard windows application.  The large green bar labelled C: is a graphic representation of our hard disk - called a "disk map", and the list below, details existing partitions on that drive.

The only partition presently on this disk is the C: drive, which is approx 10Gb in size.

In order to create an additional partition to store our files on, we will need to shrink the C: partition in size, and create a new partition which will be labelled D: in the free space that we will gain after the shrinking process.

3.Shrinking the existing partition.

There are several ways of manipulating partitions, through either the right mouse button, or the menu system at the top of the screen.  Here we will use the menu system at the top of the screen to perform our operations.

Firstly, we need to resize the C: partition to roughly 50% of it's current size in order to provide free space for our new drive.  Since C: is our boot or system drive, it is inadvisable to move it from the start of the disk.  Partition Magic works from left to right, so we will have to create space on the right side of the disk map.

Firstly, click "Operation" to view the action menu :

Next, click "Resize / Move" after which point, you will be presented with a dialog similar to this :

As you can see from the image above, i have moved my mouse pointer to a resize handle at the right of the disk map.  Shown below the disk map, is the current partition size, as well as any free space either in front of (to the left of) or behind (to the right of) the current partition.

Now we will resize the partition to approximately 50% of it's original size.  Using the left mouse button, we will click and hold on the resize handle, and drag it to the left:

As you can see, we now have approximately the same amount of free space (in grey) after the resized partition.  Once you are happy with the new partition size, click ok to confirm the action.
